Acrylic partial dentures are a less expensive replacement for missing teeth but have some major disadvantages. They are fastened with wires and rest entirely on the gum tissue and not on the remaining teeth, as in the cast partial dentures. The biting forces cause gum shrinkage, erosion of the gingival around the healthy teeth, tooth movement, bite changes and TMJ problems. In the long term, an acrylic partial denture will cause permanent damage in the mouth that can be avoided with cast partials. That is why they are correctly classified as temporary dentures as they are a short-termed solution to replace missing teeth.
