Immediate dentures, as the name implies, are placed in the mouth as soon as the natural teeth are removed. With immediate dentures, the patient need not face the world without teeth. They can soon learn to eat, smile and talk with these new teeth. There are, however, some problems with immediate placement of dentures. The gums will shrink, sometimes massively, and this can lead to sore spots, loose fit and the need for denture adhesive. Temporary liners can help during the gum shrinkage phase, which can take up to one year. Permanent relines shouldn’t be done until after 6 months to 1 year, and are at additional cost.
